I have chosen to do representation in music videos. I have looked at 3 different music videos, If I were a boy by Beyoncé , Wrecking ball by Miley Cyrus and Picking up the pieces by Paloma faith.
In if I were a boy the main stereotype is the she is portrayed in the form of a mans life. during the video Beyoncé is show to be all flirty with another man

In wrecking ball Miley is presented as naked/very little clothing. Stuarts Hall theory is all about media language being used to create representation and how stereotypes are often used to assert power. In wrecking ball stereotypes are used and also gone against. For example, Miley is naked on a wrecking ball gives of the stereotype that women are vulnerable. Miley goes against the stereotype that ‘blonds are dumb’ as she shows herself as a strong independent lady. Wrecking ball is part of the hip hop genre the song is about Miley getting her heart broken so she wrote a song expressing how she feels this also goes with the stereotype that ‘women are very emotional’ once again going with Stuart Halls representation theory.
If I were a boy by Beyoncé
The target audience is mainly focused at the middle aged/middle class because the opening scene is set in what looks to be a middle class/ middle aged house.There is radio playing sound about the weather being bad. the weather is raining outside as you can see through the window which also links with the lighting as it gives of the cold vibe due to the blue tinting

Africa is represented as warm and dry due to the red/brown tinting. the sound is also completely different compared to the opening scene at the uk there is chirping of birds or insects

Africa is represented as a very dry area at the start.then in turns into an open community ,very friendly and fun. it is also represented as grateful
